Should I See a Veterinary Specialist?
by Dr. Chris
Many people wonder if they should see a veterinary specialist for their pet's problems. In this post I'm going to go over some situations where it might pay to see a veterinary specialist. Remember the difference between a general practice veterinarian, and a veterinary specialist, is that the specialist is an expert in certain areas. These areas could include veterinary dermatology, neurology, orthopedics, behavior, or surgery. 3 examples of when you should see the very specialist1. When you need a second opinion, or if the case seems too complex for your veterinarian. Let's face it some medical problems can be extremely complex. 2. When your dog has cardiac problems. Dealing with heart problems can get very complicated, and sometimes it takes special diagnostic equipment that most general practice veterinarians simply don't have. 3. Re-occuring skin conditions. Many veterinarians are great at dealing with basic skin infections and allergies. But sometimes skin problems can be more difficult to treat. This is when you should see a dermatology expert. 5 Situations to Take Your Pet to a Veterinary SpecialistSome other situations might include an advanced surgical case, or an animal with neurological deficits. In my view, most people wait too long before being referred to a specialist. If you think your pet could benefit from a veterinary specialist, ask to be referred right away.
