Ragdoll Cat Breed Info

Ragdoll Cat Breed Info: The Ragdoll cat is the one that you have heard goes all floppy when you pick it up, hence the name "ragdoll."

History of Ragdoll Cat

The Ragdoll cat is a newer breed of felines, invented by foundation breeder, Ann Baker, in California in the 1960s; therefore there is not an extensive history of Ragdoll cats.

Baker bred a white Angora Persian queen, Josephine, who had a Himalayan coat pattern (Siamese-like) to a longhaired Burmese king as well as to Birman males.

Baker discovered that the kittens from this breeding were of substantial size, had a non-matting coat and had a very calm disposition. All her kittens seemed to grow very large, had a true loving nature and big blue eyes.

Baker realized that she had created something very special, so she sold some of her kittens and meanwhile, kept a few and decided to breed them very carefully. Baker only kept the kittens with the desired look and carefully line bred them to keep the line pure. In fact, all Ragdolls must be descendents of Josephine in order to be considered a Ragdoll. They must not have another strain of cat breed in them, like Persian, Birman or Burmese.

Ragdolls can vary slightly as far as in pattern or in color, but they must all have the Ragdoll-like disposition, in other words, they are floppy when they are relaxed. In fact, a RagdollÕs behavior is usually compared to a BirmanÕs since they are usually known as the most laid-back cats.

The original Ragdoll colors were:

Seal
Chocolate
Blue
Lilac

These four standards were based off of the Himalayan standards.

Ragdoll Patterns are:

  • Colorpoint
  • Bicolor
  • Mitted
  • Lynx

Nowadays, some Ragdoll breeders now include the following colors:

Cream Ragdolls
Mink Ragdolls
Red or Flame Ragdolls
Solid Ragdolls
Tortie Point, Tabby Point, Tortie Tabby Point (all Solid or Mitted)

It takes a Ragdoll cat about 2 years to acquire their full color. They also aren't fully grown until they are 4 years old.

Ragdolls are ideal family cats and also are ideal for children, as they are prone to retreat from a conflict, rather than to attack. Certainly, too, their laid back approach to life is an ideal personality to match with a high-energy child.
