HistoryThe Pug is a small breed of dog with a very characteristic short snout and wrinkled face. They originated from China during the Shang Dynasty and it popularity spread across Europe and to America. This dog continues to be one of the most popular dog breeds in the United States currently ranking 15th out of 156 dog breeds.
Breed Specific ConditionsWhile overall the Pug is a healthy dog, there are disease conditions that show up this breed, due to its breed conformation, these include: Entropion - A medical condition where the eyelids roll inwards towards the eye resulting in corneal irritation. Surgery is needed to correct this condition. Heat Insensitivity - Pugs are very susceptible to heat and should not be keep in hot environments.
Pug Dog Encephalitis - A form of Granulomatous Encephalitis which is an inflammation of the nervous system. It occurs in young Pugs between 6 months and three years of age and there is not treatment or cure. Brachycephalic Syndrome - Pugs, because of their short snout tend to have elongated soft palates and collapsible tracheas which lead to problems breathing. Dystocia - Due to the Pug's large head, it can be difficult to give birth, which may result in the needing of a C-section to deliver the puppies. Skin Fold Dermatitis - Deep skin folds can retain moisture allowing bacteria and yeast to grow, and cause an infection. Demodectic Mange - Pugs seems to be more susceptible to mange and it often occurs in puppies. Eye Problems - Because of their bulging eyes, they are more prone to injuries and irritations of the eye from hair and eyelashes. SummaryThese disease conditions can be seen in the Pug and are conditions that an insurance company would factor into your monthly pet insurance premium. Pug insurance is probably more expensive than average due to their increased incidence of problems.
