Comparing Pet Insurance Policies

For insurance policies can be difficult to compare side-by-side because each company offers a slightly different twist to each policy. Is not like comparing apples to apples, is more like apples to oranges.

Below are seven tips on how to find the best deal on pet insurance, and what to look for when buying a pet policy.

1. Premiums

The starting point for comparing any policy is to look at what the monthly or annual premium is. You should see first start by figuring out how much you want to spend each month on a policy. Then look for policies that have premiums in this price range.

2. Deductible

Below are the deductible a policy has the better, but also the more expensive. Most pet insurance policies have a $100 deductible. There are a few policies that have deductibles that range from $50-$200.

3. Coverage

Next at the amount of coverage you get. You want the most amount of coverage for the lowest premium. Obviously the more coverage you have the better but it will be more expensive. It is good to have basic accident coverage, but buying a comprehensive pet policy that also includes vaccinations might not be worth the money.

4. Pre-existing Conditions

Many pet insurance policies have pre-existing conditions clauses. If your pet is currently sick or has been sick in the last six months this may prevent you from getting a policy or increase the amount of money you have to pay. Look for a policy that is the least restrictive on pre-existing conditions.

5. Cancer

Cancer is one of the most expensive medical conditions that you will experience as a pet owner. Before you buy a policy make sure you are clear on exactly what type of cancer is the coverage and what the coverage limits are. Treating a pet for cancer is very expensive, and gets more expensive every year with more advanced treatments.

6. Coverage Limits

Also before you buy a policy should find out what the coverage limits are. Obviously you want the highest coverage limits for the lowest premium. Coverage limits can vary per condition, or a year. Make sure you understand exactly what kind of coverage your policy offers.

7. Discounts

Always ask for discounts when buying a pet policy. In many companies offer chances for multiple discounts so be sure to ask for one.
