Pet Insurance Misconception #9: My Vet Doesn't Accept Pet Insurance

by Dr. Chris

March 27, 2011 Continuing our series on common misconceptions about pet insurance. At #9 on our list is the common mis-belief that your veterinarian does not accept pet insurance. While technically this may be true, you can still use pet insurance at any clinic and with any veterinarian.

With pet insurance you are the person who gets reimbursed, not your veterinarian. (you have to pay the bill first and then get reimbursed)

This common misconception about pet insurance likely arises from the fact that with human medicine, the hospital/doctor have to accept the insurance because they are the ones to get reimbursed, not you the patient/client.

So again, with pet insurance all you do is fill out the pet insurance claim work and submit it to your insurance company. They then review the claim and cut you a check to reimburse you what you paid at the veterinary clinic.
