Pet Insurance Misconception #7: It Doesn’t Cover Anything

by Dr. Chris

May 8, 2011 At #7 on our list of common misconceptions about pet insurance is the fact that many people think that it doesn’t cover anything, or doesn’t cover very much. They feel that the value they get from pet insurance is not worth the price.

While it might be true of other types of insurance, I don’t think this is true about pet insurance. Today pet insurance covers all sorts of injuries and illnesses. Many even cover the cost of normal preventative care like dental cleanings and vaccines.

I think this misconception is very prevalent because most people don’t take the time to read the specifics about what their pet insurance policy covers.

One example is pre-existing conditions. If you buy a policy while your pet is sick and expect a company to cover your pet you will likely be out of luck.

Just like you can’t buy auto insurance after your car is wrecked and expect the insurance company to pay for it.

I always advise people to carefully read over their pet policy to understand what is covered and what is not so you are not taken be surprise. If you can’t understand what is written in your pet policy, be sure to call that company’s customer service hotline. They will gladly explain what is covered and what is not, if they want to keep your business.
