Pet Insurance Misconception #10: Veterinarian Files the Paperwork

March 13, 2011 This week we start our series on common misconceptions about pet insurance. At #10 on our list is the common misbelief that like human medicine, the pet hospital would handle all the pet insurance paperwork. Unfortunately it does not work like this. As the pet owner you have to get the claim paperwork filled out yourself. You will of course need the signature of the vet at some point. Once you fill out all the paper work then you have to follow up with the pet insurance company and make sure it is paid out to you. You have to pay your veterinary bill first. Then you are repaid by the pet insurance company in most cases.
