Pet Insurance Misconception #1: I’ll Wait Till My Pet Gets Olderby Dr. Chris Topping our list at the number one misconception of pet insurance is that many people believe that waiting to get pet insurance until their pet gets older is a wise choice. Beware of this choice, because some pet insurance companies will not insure pets once they get to a certain age. The will only insure them if they were already on one of their polices as a younger pet. Another thing that many people fail to realize is that if you wait until your pet becomes ill, it is too late for pet insurance to pay for those medical bills. Most pet insurance companies have waiting periods and clauses known as “pre-existing conditions.” So for example if your pet has a gastric foreign body and becomes ill. A newly purchased policy won’t pay for these medical bills due to a 60 day waiting period. Also most polices won’t pay for it because it qualifies as a pre-existing condition, meaning your pet had it at the time of policy purchase. Your pet would have to go about 1 year without any GI problems now for pet insurance to cover your pet.
