Pet Insurance For Older DogPet insurance for older dog is a good idea to consider because as a pet ages they are more susceptible to certain diseases. And also the diseases that they are prone to are more chronic in nature which leads to a greater veterinary expense. Obviously, the cost to insure an older dog is going to be more expensive than a younger dog, because the risk of the dog becoming ill is much higher. So for the insurance company to reduce the amount of risk on their part they request that you pay a higher premium. 3 Providers There are three providers that I know of that will provide pet insurance for an older dog. They are 24PetWatch, ShelterCare, and PetFirst. 24PetWatch and ShelterCare offer similar plans. PetFirst also offers a senior dog plan but it is more comprehensive and is therefore more expensive. 24PetWatch and ShelterCare These two companies are related which is why they have a similar plan with a similar monthly premium. If you are looking to get coverage from these two companies, the starting monthly premium is about $32.95 a month. But this covers accidents and illnesses only and the deductible is $200.
This company also offers and senior dog policy by the starts at $66.95. The reason it is more expensive than the first two plans mentioned is because it not only covers accidents and illnesses but also covers routine care. So if you're looking for a more inclusive policy this might be a good idea. The deductible for this plan is $100. Which One To Choose? Deciding which plan is right for your older dog depends on how much you're willing to pay and how much coverage you want. Obviously the more you pay the more coverage you will get. One way to help you figure out how much pet insurance you should get is to decide on roughly how much you spend at the veterinary clinic every year or how much you anticipate to spend. Then add up how much the yearly premium will be for your pet policy and then compare the two. Another alternative besides getting pet insurance is to simply just save up money in a pet emergency fund. This is a good idea for people who have the discipline to save. If you're having trouble deciding consult with your veterinarian they might have some valuable advice to share with you and help point you in the right direction.
