Accidents

A basic accident policy will only cover you if your pet is involved in an acute accident. Does not cover your pet for chronic illnesses or disease.

Illness

Illness coverage covers you if your pet is sick for any reason, this is a very basic coverage and is included in most pet policies, even the cheapest ones.

Hospitalization

Hospitalization coverage you if your pet has to spend the night in the veterinary hospital. If your pet has to spend more than a few days in the hospital the price to really add up which is where this insurance comes in handy.

X-rays

X-rays are expensive, just two basic x-ray x-rays can cost well over $100. which is why it's a good idea to have x-rays included in your pet policy. X-rays are used to diagnose diseases and that area very common diagnostic method.

Surgeries

Surgeries are very expensive which is why it's a good idea to have them covered. Also since most surgeries are done on an emergency basis they can end up being even more expensive. Spays and neuters are not covered under most surgery coverages, because these are routine surgeries. If you want spays and neuters covered then you have to buy a comprehensive policy.

Vaccinations

Your dog or cat usually only need t be vaccinated once to every three years. So sometimes it does not make sense to pay for this extra policy coverage. You end up paying monthly to have vaccinations coverage when your pet only needs to be vaccinated once every few years.

Dental, fleas, heartworm

Dental coverage is included in many basic policies, so it is wise to ask for it. Pet dental cleanings are more expensive than human cleanings because pets need to be anesthetized for them.

Some comprehensive policies cover medications for fleas and heartworms. Obviously this is much more expensive.
