Pet Insurance Claims Rise 10% from Last Year

December 4, 2010 According to Trupanion, one of the largest pet insurance companies in the United States, the average size of pet insurance claims has increased almost 10% in the last year.

This is a bit surprising, since the economy has not really rebounded. Normally when the economy is in recession people spend less on their pets. So a 10% increase in veterinary expenses shows either one of two things.

Either these people truly consider pets as part of the family, or they are relying on pet insurance to cover the bill.

In this case it seems that both are true. If these people did file pet insurance claims in order to reimburse their pet's medical expenses, they likely would have negotiated with the veterinarian a lower fee, or less services.

According to the American Pet Products Association, the amount that people will spend at the veterinary clinic will likely increase from 12.04 billion in 2009, to 12.79 billion in 2010.
