Flying with Your Pet? Here Are Some Carry On Tips

We all like to travel with our pets and many times we want to carry them onto the airplane with us rather then making them travel in the cold cargo hold beneath the passenger cabin.

If you are getting ready for a trip and you want to take your to pet on board with you, here are five things to help you get ready for your next plane trip.

First of all, made sure the carrier meets the proper carry on requirements. Different airlines have different requirements, for example, Southwest airline requirements are 22" x 14" x 9".

Second, you should try and book a direct flight if possible. The less time that you spend with your pet in the airport waiting for your flight the better for your animal and for you.

Third, although you will maintain your pet with you at all times you should still make sure they are microchipped and have a collar and ID tag on them as well.

Fourth, you should bring along some food and some canned food, but make sure they are 3 ounces or less to meet airline requirements. Also, once through the security area, you can buy bottled water to give to your pet. But watch out so they don't have to use the restroom too frequently.

Fifth, before a trip with your pets, it is always best to have a veterinary checkup done. You need to make sure that your pet can handle the stress of flying. Also you should get a health certificate if you're traveling to different states, if the airline requires it, or traveling to a foreign country.

Also at this time, it might be a good idea to talk about sedation as well to keep your pet calm in the cabin.

If you need more information on pet carry-on requirements for airplanes, talk to the company that you're flying with, since each airline has their own special requirements. The most important thing is to start planning well in advance to have everything ready.
