Equine InsuranceEquine insurance is available in several different forms. Equine mortality, major medical, loss of use, general liability, infertility, racehorse owners liability, umbrella, care custody and control, individual horse owners, and riding clubs liability. Medical Coverage Medical insurance is available for horses. You can get a policy that just covers accidents, or more comprehensive coverage that will pay for vaccinations and surgical procedures. Infertility insurance is available if your stallion becomes permanently incapable of impregnating mares as result of an accident sickness or disease. Loss of use insurance is available and covers you if your horse is not able to function in it's stated use (i.e. racing, dressage, etc.) Liability Coverage General liability insurance is available if you perform boarding. training or breeding. This covers you if you're sued by a third party who was injured. Your homeowners insurance policy may not adequate adequately cover you for liability exposures from owning a horse.
Riding clubs have liability exposures as well. Meetings, fundraisers, and trail rides in public and private events and locations open you up to liability issues. Race Horses If you are a racehorse owner and have a multi-million dollar investment in a horse then having insurance is a must. Also, you have to have liability insurance in case the rider becomes injured or the horse kicks or tramples someone coming to or from the track. Homeowners Insurance Many homeowner's policies do have liability coverages, but generally these do not extend to cover damages your horse might do. So be sure to ask your provider if horses are covered, if not you might have to purchase additional liability insurance.
