Dog Wars: Illegal Dog Imports Or Puppy Mills
Puppy mills are being shut down all across the United States because of the many increases in state regulations. But because the demand for pets continues to be high, the number of illegally imported dogs is at an all-time high. Illegally imported pets have always been a problem, but now dogs that are illegally imported have now become a bigger problem then ever before. In order to get around puppy mill bans, breeders are now raising dogs in foreign countries and importing them illegally to make up for their lost income. Because these dogs are raised in foreign countries, there is no way to know under what conditions these dogs are raised. Also zoonotic diseases like rabies are a big concern because almost all of these dogs are unvaccinated. Unfortunately, the United States has a big appetite for dogs and cats. And most people usually put little thought into where their pet have come from. As a result of this, some people argue that it would be much better to regulate the puppy mills more thoroughly then to just shut all of them down. Because there are no regulations limiting how many pets a person can own, the average citizen will come continue buying pets whether they need to get them to legally or illegally. No elected official would ever pass regulation telling families that they could own just one pet, but is always look upon very favorably when they try to pass regulation to shutdown puppy mills. If you want to help out in trying to reduce the number of illegal dog imports coming into this country then you should try and contact your local government representatives. It is only through regulating all aspects of the pet supply that we can guarantee American citizens a safe, healthy and legal pet.
