Dog Bite InsuranceDog bite insurance has traditionally been included in most homeowners insurance policies. However with the growing number of claims from dog bites these companies are trying to find a way to prevent paying out such claims. It is estimated that at least 2% of the population or 4.7 million people are bitten each year, and that 77% of dog bites are from their own pet dog and occur at home according to the Humane Society website. Call Your Provider The first thing you need to do is call your homeowners insurance company, or read your policy. Most likely your policy will not say anything specific about including dog bites but if it excludes them it will specifically say so. If your policy for your home does not include dog liability protection you should try and find a different provider if you own dogs. Remember most dog bites happen within the family, but it is still important to have medical coverage in case this happens.
Amount of Coverage Needed The amount of coverage you need for dog bite insurance is best determined by consultation with an insurance broker. Brokers are much more knowledgeable about the types of insurance coverage you need than just an insurance agent. Which is why you need to know the difference between the two.
If you have had your homeowners policy for a long time dog bites are likely included in it. However, if your policy was recently issued, odds are it might be excluded so find out.
