Dachshund Pet InsuranceDachshund pet insurance is available from most pet insurance companies. Here is a little about their history and some breed specific conditions to be aware of. History The Dachshund is a very short legged, but elongated dog in the hound family. Originally developed in Germany, their original purpose was to hunt badgers. Fully grown they weigh about 15 to 28 pounds. This dog has a playful personality.
Breed Specific Conditions While overall the Dachshund is a very healthy dog, there are a few disease conditions that show up this breed, these include: Intervertebral Disk Disease - Because of their very long back, they are very prone to this condition. Vertebral disks prolapse out of place and if they pinch the spinal cord, it can result in permanent paralysis. Patellar Luxation - The patella, or kneecap, moves out of place resulting in the dog becoming lame. Epilepsy - Chronic neurological disorder characterized by recurrent unprovoked seizures.
Cushing's Disease - clinical signs are the result of a high level of cortisol in the blood caused by either a pituitary tumor or and adrenal gland tumor. Hypothyroidism - Insufficient production of thyroid hormone by the thyroid gland. Allergies and Atopy Cataracts - A increase in the opacity of the lens resulting in blindness. Glaucoma - Fluid build up in the eye which can be painful and result in blindness if not treated. Retinal Atrophy - Degeneration of the retina eventually resulting in blindness. Cherry Eye - A prolapse of the gland of the third eyelid Summary The disease conditions can be seen in the Dachshund and are conditions that an insurance company would factor into your monthly pet insurance premium. Premiums for Dachshunds are probably higher in general due to their high incidence of spinal problems.
