Compare Dog Insurance Plans

If you’re trying to compare dog insurance plans and have started already you’ll likely experience some frustration because no two plans seem to be exactly the same.

With all the different variables, pet insurance can be downright confusing to the consumer. So how do you go about comparing oranges to apples?

Here are some of the main points that you should be aware of when comparing dog insurance plans.

Basic or Comprehensive Coverage

A basic pet insurance policy normally just covers accidents and illnesses. A comprehensive pet policy covers vaccinations, spays, and neuters.

A basic policy often makes more sense because it covers more expensive items. Under a comprehensive policy vaccinations are covered, by your pet likely only has to be vaccinated every 1-3 years. So under a comprehensive policy you’re paying every month for vaccinations that you only need every few years.

Premiums

Add up how much the premium is every month so you have a yearly total. Now compare how much you normally spend at the vet in one year compared to how much the premium will be.

This will give you a good idea of how much more expensive pet insurance will be for you. Remember, the jury is still out on whether pet insurance is a good deal or not. Even veterinarians still do not agree.

Coverage Limits

When comparing insurance policies make sure you review the coverage limits. Some policies have coverage limits per illness, while others have coverage limits per year, and even some have both. Of course it is always best to get the highest coverage limits, but this usually means an increase in your premium price.

Pre-existing Conditions and Breed Specific Conditions

Look for a company that does not penalize you for breed specific conditions. And also look for a company that has shorter waiting periods for pre-existing conditions.

If you can find a policy that does not penalize you for either of these conditions that is great. However these types of policies can be hard to find.

If you’re seriously considering buying a pet insurance policy try to get at least three quotes from different insurance companies.
