History The Beagle is a medium sized dog in the hound group. It's a very popular dog in American due to its compact size and great personality. Hypothyroidism - Insufficient production of thyroid hormone by the thyroid gland. Dwarfism - Caused by a bone growth disorder. Immune Mediated Polygenic Arthritis - Form of arthritis which is caused by the immune system seen in young beagles. Glaucoma - Fluid build up in the eye which can be painful and result in blindness if not treated. Corneal Dystrophy - An opacity of the cornea (has bluish appearance). Cherry Eye - A prolapse of the gland of the third eyelid Retinal Atrophy - Degeneration of the retina eventually resulting in blindness. Summary The disease conditions can be seen in the beagle and are conditions that an insurance company would factor into your monthly pet insurance premium.
