Avian Pet InsuranceQuestion: Hello, I have a couple of parakeets and was wondering if it would make sense to buy an avian pet insurance policy for them? I was told that the cost would be about $200 a year to insure both of them and that I would get a discount if I paid for the whole year in advance. Have you heard of bird pet insurance before and if so does it make sense for me? Answer: This type of pet insurance has been around for a few years now and is available primarily through VPI, of that although there could be other companies offering a policy that I am not aware of. Normally you would be reimbursed on a benefit schedule and not as a fixed percentage of the bill in this situation, but again this depends on your carrier. Whether or not this type of insurance for your bird makes sense depends on what your financial situation is. If you like piece of mind that this type of insurance can provide that it might be a good idea for you. However if you can save money in a bird emergency fund that might be a better use of your money. Remember even the most veterinarians still do not agree on whether or not the insurance makes financial sense, which is why it's ultimately up to for you to the side. I would add up how much money you spend a year at the veterinarian with your parakeets, and then add up how much your yearly premium would and then make a decision after looking at those two numbers. At least get a quote from them and then decide if the price and coverage make sense to you.
